Reptile Handler and researcher

Sandwiched between the Kruger National Park and Blyde River Canyon, the reptile centre is located in a wildlife and biodiversity paradise. Base yourself at a reptile research, rescue and education centre as you take part in your volunteer activities and project work in the area.

About the Accommodation

Where
In the northeast regions of South Africa near the town of Hoedspruit, this wildlife rich area is home to many reserves, national parks and unique species. It also means a high number of snakes and other reptiles for you to study and support.

The centre and volunteer space

Housing many animals including: snakes, lizards, turtles, birds, arachnids and amphibians. Work with these daily during your placement and help educate locals and tourists alike that visit the centre.

 

Staying on site and located behind and out of the eyes of the public, volunteer accommodation has large communal spaces, swimming pools, braai (BBQ) facilities and lounge for relaxing.

Bedrooms

There are a few styles of room such as private rooms, shared and bunk rooms. Depending on availability you'll be able to request but every room is same sex and comes with mosquito nets, power sockets and fans.

Toilets and bathrooms

Shared toilets and bathrooms are available at the volunteer accommodations and in some bedrooms, in addition, there are public toilets at the centres restaurant and cafe area.

Communal Area and Kitchen

The centre itself is a social environment and open to the public. Meet and work with visiting guests as well as other organisations and staff that work with the centre.

 

Volunteer groups are very international and most volunteers spend their time in the communal areas, pool tables, lounge & entertainment or braai area (BBQ) when not working with wildlife.

On-site Amenities

​On-site Activities
Most of the work week will involve supporting the centre and its work, helping care, treat or study the animals on site or practice for your tests and qualifications. When not taking part in weekly activities there are many books and the entertainment area has a TV along with Wi-Fi.

Board games, ball games and cards are popular, so feel free to bring your favourite.

Phone and Wi-Fi

For those who wish to purchase their own South African SIM card and phone, you will have a chance to do so when ariving at the airport.

Wi-Fi is also available for Facebook and WhatsApp.
 

Laundry

There is an on-site launderette which you will be able to access, so you can keep your clothes fresh and clean - and ready to get mucky again during activities

Fencing and Security

The site is fully fenced off to keep a comfortable and safe environment.

 

Animals such as monkeys like to visit the lodge or wild snakes during the summer months. When this occurs, staff will explain any health and safety concerns to ensure that you are comfortable with their presence and understand how to co-exist with them.

Although the place is well illuminated at night, please do stay vigilant.
 

Rules and Respect

The site itself is your home, so please treat the place along with other guests and staff who share the accommodation with you with the respect they deserve, and you will be treated likewise.

Equally, be mindful that you are in a protected area. Anyone found making a mess, damaging the environment or wildlife risk failing the course or being asked to leave.
